Today is the big day
we’ve been working toward for six years. We are announcing NEVS as a contract manufacturer. We are building the first series-produced
Solar Electric Vehicle. It will be produced in Europe. It will be produced at the price we promised. We have a strong partner with a strong vision, in a sustainable production site. We made a promise with
the release event and told the people “Hey the Sion is coming
onto the streets to certain conditions”. What has happened in the meantime
is we’ve had to make an important decision. On the one hand we had the issue of timing, so can we manage the timetable and on the other hand the issue of cost, environment, sustainability, social standards – how will the Sion be produced? If you take a look at the circumstances,
then you have to think that this partnership will last at least 8 years. And if you then look at what is on the other side:
a timing delay of 10 months, then you have to say quite clearly,
one rather chooses the path of an eight year long, sustainable project with a good logistical structure. And then we have decided,
hey it really is about pushing things forward and making a difference. and not to rush one’s fences in order to keep the timing. The three most important reasons
in the cooperation with NEVS is first to ensure that we can offer our vehicle
to that aggressive price 25,500 €. Second reason is the capacity. In a two-shift operation
we produce 43,000 vehicles a year on the CAM line. Here where we are right now
this is the customer care line. The plan is to produce roughly 200 cars per day.
200 Sion per day will pass through this station here. And the third reason and from my point
the most important topic: NEVS is how we are, very interested
to produce ecologically right. And we have, thus, the possibility of
100 % renewable energies in our own production. I think there are two things which are different
in this program and that is in the body shop because there we have
an aluminium space frame concept. The second thing I think, is very, very important:
We will not use the paintshop at all! That will save a lot of energy
and that will reduce the costs. We have a long heritage. That means we have been producing vehicles for 50 years
with a high quality and we have a high flexibility. We have skilled people. We’ve got super companies in the background like
Continental, Bosch and big names and with NEVS with their experience of SAAB and the history that they’ve had is an absolutely fantastic solution,
perfect for such a cool team, and this is an another step in that direction. This is good news for Trollhättan.
I mean getting to build cars here is what we want. This is our heritage and this is what we like to do here.
So building the Sion here is a great thing for us. It is amazing that we are going be part
producing the first SEV here at NEVS. I don’t know
why no one thought about actually adding solar panels directly into the vehicles before. We have created a completely new technology
able to cover the full vehicle and for the first time in history
we will make that a series production. I think we are going through a major event now in automotive or transportation that is affecting the whole world. I am the third generation working in this plant. I started my first summer job
when I was sixteen here as a welder. My dad worked here for 42 years.
Before him his dad. Maybe my son who is six now
will also work here some day. Trollhättan is ready for the Sion. NEVS is ready for the Sion.
